Building Carer-Friendly Communities

8th June 2026

During Carers’ Week (8-14 June 2026), we’re highlighting the importance of building carer-friendly communities.

More people than ever are now providing care to family members and friends.

Many carers are unaware that there is support available to help them in their caring role.

Community pharmacists are often a first point of contact for carers, providing medication advice and support, helping make things a little easier when time is tight and responsibilities are many.

Sometimes, just having a friendly, familiar place to turn to, can make all the difference to help you care for others, and also yourself.

Kathryn Turner, Head of Pharmacy in the Strategic Planning and Performance Group at the Department of health said: “Caring for a loved one is often rewarding—but it can also be overwhelming at times. If you’re a carer, you’re not on your own.  Community pharmacists play an important role in supporting carers and everyday play their part in building carer‑friendly communities.

“Your local community pharmacy team can help you in your caring role, in two key ways (i) provide medicines guidance and support (ii) share health and wellbeing advice to enable you to stay well in your caring role.

Kathryn added: “Through Pharmacy First Services, you can also get advice and treatment for everyday health conditions.”

Community Pharmacist Richard Garvey from Co Armagh explains in the video,  how local pharmacy teams are here for you – no appointment is needed.
