Health and Social Care Board migration to the Department of Health

2nd March 2022

As part of the wider transformation of Health and Social Care (HSC) services in Northern Ireland, the Health and Social Care Board (HSCB) will close on 31 March 2022 and responsibility for its functions will transfer to the Department of Health.

From 1 April 2022, the former HSCB staff will work in the Strategic Planning and Performance Group (SPPG) as an integral part of the Department of Health.

The vital work that the HSCB currently delivers will continue – there will be no change to key services or contacts – but the new arrangements will enhance system leadership and accountability, improve integration and make our decision making processes more streamlined.

The closure of the Board is the first step in a wider transformation which will consider how future HSC services will be planned and managed differently.

Work has already commenced on the development of a new Integrated Care System (ICS) for Northern Ireland which signals a new way of planning and managing our health and social care services based on the specific needs of the population.
