The aim of the Dental Access Scheme is to improve access to health service dental care during the working week for unregistered dental patients experiencing an emergency, urgent, or pressing dental condition.
To be eligible to be seen, you must not be registered with a dental practice, or a private scheme, and must be experiencing an emergency, urgent or pressing dental condition.
Emergency and urgent dental conditions include:
- Dental swelling (spreading infection)
- Trauma to teeth arising from an external force
- Uncontrolled bleeding following extraction
- Severe dental pain not controlled by over the counter medications
Pressing dental conditions include:
- Mild to moderate dental pain
- Untreated dental decay
- Fractured, loose, or debonded fillings, crowns, bridges, veneers
- Fractured, lost, or ill-fitting dentures
- Acute, moderate, or severe gum conditions
To access the scheme, you should contact one of the participating practices directly, outline the dental problem you are experiencing, and ask if they have any appointments available under the Scheme. Appointments will only be offered if you meet the above criteria and if the practice has sufficient capacity.
Demand for the scheme is expected to be high and participating practices will only be able to offer appointments if they have capacity and if they have any DAS appointment slots available. As such you may have to check with a number of practices and / or be prepared to travel outside of your local area. Practices will prioritise patients with emergency or urgent conditions and as such those with pressing conditions may need to wait longer for an appointment.
Practices are only able to offer you one appointment as part of the scheme. Practices may offer further appointments, or to register you as a health service patient, however they are under no obligation to do so.
